Sermon notes

At midweek service on Wednesday, we received the ministry of Apostle as he taught on the sermon, “The Importance of Bible Interpretation.

He began by highlighting that many people have misinterpreted the Word of God, even on global platforms. Interpretation is a very essential aspect of the believer’s life, and God is only committed to defending what He has said. Bible misinterpretation has real implications and consequences. (Jeremiah 23:21)When it comes to understanding and interpretation, the word used is “Hermeneutics.”

📍Hermeneutics - “The science of interpretation.” The word is applied to the explanation of written documents and is therefore closely related to the science of language.

📌Always remember: the Bible is beneficial to us, but it was not originally written to us. Therefore, we must learn how much of it applies to us and how to interpret it correctly within its intended context.

Hermeneutics assumes that there are diverse modes of thought, cultural differences, and ambiguities among men. It therefore seeks to bridge the gap between a writer and his readers so that the intended meaning can be accurately understood.

Types of Hermeneutics ➔ General Hermeneutics - The study of the general principles and rules of interpretation that apply to all forms of literature and communication. ➔ Special Hermeneutics - Devoted to the explanation of particular books and classes of writing. ➔ Sacred/Biblical Hermeneutics - The science of interpreting the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments.

📍The Necessity of Hermeneutics ➔ It is important because of the apparent diversity in the minds, backgrounds, and cultures of men. (2 Peter 3:16) ➔ It helps us understand the qualifications and responsibilities of the interpreter. (Ephesians 3:1-4, 2 Corinthians 1:13) pes of Hermeneutics ➔ General Hermeneutics - The study of the general principles and rules of interpretation that apply to all forms of literature and communication. ➔ Special Hermeneutics - Devoted to the explanation of particular books and classes of writing. ➔ Sacred/Biblical Hermeneutics - The science of interpreting the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments.

There are certain words, expressions, and forms of communication used in Bible times that are now obsolete or no longer commonly used today. ➔ Figures of Speech. Like any other literary material, the Bible contains various figures of speech such as sarcasm (2 Corinthians 11:16) and hyperbole (John 21:25), which must be properly understood to avoid misinterpretation.

➔ Culture. The cultural context of the Bible differs significantly from our present-day culture, so we must not take every word or instruction literally. (Romans 16:16, 2 Corinthians 13:12, 1 Thessalonians 5:26, 1 Peter 5:14, Luke 7:45)

As believers, learning sound interpretative skills enables us to read, understand, and accurately apply the Scriptures for ourselves.
